PAST EVENT | “Leadership Perspectives – Challenges and Inspiration From My Bookshelf”

April 10, 2015

Featured Presenter: Lou Anna K. Simon – President, Michigan State University

“Superb!…”Very Inspiring and Motivating”…”Dr Simon was a refreshing voice in the area of leadership.”…”Q and A was great”…”…(she) brings hope to the struggle of leading those who are afraid to move out of their comfort zone.

MSU President Lou Anna Simon shared her core leadership principles to a sell out crowd at our April 10th event.

Dr. Simon emphasized that leaders need to carry a set of core principles with them and not wait until there is a crisis to try and figure out what those are.  Using memorable terms and clever images she helped illustrate a variety of principles that guide her leadership decisions.  One principle Dr. Simon discussed was what she termed “The Gyroscope.” This represents the core values that a leader needs to hold onto, especially in a crisis.  She emphasized “A gyroscope can be buffeted, but the core will remain the same.”
Dr. Simon also mentioned some of the books that have influenced her over the years and encouraged attendees to read a variety of books to expand their perspectives.  The group’s eagerness to learn from this highly respected and successful leader was evident during a lively Q and A period following her presentation. Although there was a high percentage of “green and white” in the audience, one participant expressed that everyone found the presentation valuable regardless of school “stripe!”
