Presenters: Denise and Mike Busley, Founders and Chief Pie-ologists of Grand Traverse Pie Company
Featured Book: Lovemarks: The Future Beyond Brands by Kevin Roberts
Event Recap: What makes someone LOVE a brand? How do you create an emotional connection to your brand that inspires “Loyalty Beyond Reason?”
At our May 9th meeting, we were all treated to more than just a piece of pie, by Mike and Denise Busley, founders and owners of the Grand Traverse Pie Company. We we were inspired by how they are using the “Power of Pie” to spread a little love into the lives of their customers, their employees and their community. The Busley’s shared their process of clarifying their company values and culture and highlighted some of the steps they’ve taken in their on-going journey to build a business that is about more than just pie. We were all reminded that whatever service we offer or product we sell, we can do business in a way that connects with the heart of who we are serving, and in doing so, help grow our business, our employees and make a difference in our community.
More About Mike and Denise Busley:
Denise and Mike Busley are true Michigan entrepreneurs. Born and raised in our great state, Denise grew up in Portage, and Mike is a native of Lansing. The two met in 1977 while they were students at MSU. They both graduated in 1980; Denise with a BS in microbiology, and Mike with a BS in Civil Engineering. After graduation they moved to Southern California and spent the next 15 years building their careers and family. Denise worked in medical sales and Mike served as an engineer in the defense industry. After visiting a pie shop in Julian, California, they started dreaming of a family pie business of their own.
After a great deal of consideration and planning, Mike and Denise decided they wanted more from their personal and professional lives. They developed a business plan, packed up their family, moved back home to Michigan and started a business of their own. The Busleys opened Grand Traverse Pie Company in 1996, with their first location in Traverse City.
Since that time, the company has grown substantially and now includes 14 locations throughout Michigan and Indiana. The vision of Grand Traverse Pie Company is to spread the love of pie through everything they make and do… they call it, “Warming Hearts and Community Through Pie.” They are committed to using Michigan products and suppliers whenever possible, and strive to be a “connecting point” in each of their communities.
More About Featured Book, Lovemarks:
Considered one of the best business books in the first five years of this century, Kevin Roberts’s Lovemarks is back, revised and featuring a new chapter that looks beyond brands to the heart of the consumer. Looking at the customer devotion of products like Coca-Cola, Levi, and Apple, Roberts concludes that love is the answer to long-term success. CEO of advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi, Roberts weaves personal history with his brand-making philosophy to show how traditional branding practices have become stultified. Instead, he presents his plan for the mystery, magic, and sensuality needed to create a customer love affair.
